Londoners face debt crisis
Capitalise - London's Debt Advice Partnership - has published a report identifying the trends in personal debt and demands on free face-to-face debt advice services in London.
Key findings include:
- The average level of debt amongst Londoners seeking free debt advice has increased by 16% since January 2007 to over £18,000 per person.
- A rise in debt among people in work.
- Citizens Advice Bureaux in London have seen an increase of 35% in demand for its debt advice service.
- Capitalise's debt advisors report that creditors are getting more aggressive and less willing to negotiate a solution.
Capitalise is calling for an integrated approach between local and central government and the voluntary sector to tackle the increase in personal debt and more intervention where creditors are acting unreasonably.
The report, Up to Our Neck in It, was launched on 22 June 2009 at the London Debt Summit. Mubin Haq, Director of Policy and Grants at Trust for London, spoke at the event.
