- In 2008, a lower proportion of lone parents were working in Inner (40%) and Outer London (50%) compared with the rest of England (60%).
- Ten years earlier, 35% of lone parents in Inner London were working, as were 45% in Outer London (and 50% on average in the rest of England).
- Between 2001 and 2008, as the proportion of lone parents in paid work continued to rise in the rest of England, there was no increase in Inner London and only a small increase in Outer London

What does this graph show?
About 40% of lone parents in Inner London and 50% in Outer London were working in 2008, compared to 60% in the rest of England. Ten years earlier the equivalent figures were 30% in Inner London, 45% in Outer London and 50% on average in England.
Most of the increase in Inner and Outer London took place at the end of the 1990s. There was no further increase in lone parent employment rates in Inner London between 2001 and 2007. By contrast, the proportion of lone parents in paid work continued to rise in the rest of England.

Workless :
People who are not working but want a job and those people who are officially unemployed make up a group who can be described as 'lacking work but wanting work'. Anyone else of working-age who is not working is therefore 'lacking work but not wanting work'. The total workless population therefore includes those lacking and wanting work as well as those lacking but not wanting work.
