Children in households receiving out-of-work benefits
Key points
- The proportion of children in households receiving out-of-work benefits varies hugely between boroughs, from 9% in Richmond to 50% in Tower Hamlets.
- Boroughs in Inner London have, on average, far higher proportions of children in households receiving benefits than boroughs in Outer London.
- While the five boroughs with the lowest proportion of children living in households receiving out-of-work benefits are all in Outer London, there are nevertheless above-average proportions in areas of Outer East and North East London.
The proportion of dependent children in households receiving out-of-work benefits
What does this map show?
The proportions of children in households receiving out-of-work benefits range from 46% in Tower Hamlets to 9% in Richmond. This is a much greater variation than for adults receiving out-of-work benefits.
The six boroughs with the highest proportion of children in households receiving benefits are all in Inner London. The seven boroughs with the lowest proportion are all in Outer London.
However, in Greenwich, Barking & Dagenham, Enfield and Waltham Forest there are above-average proportions of children living in households receiving benefits. These findings from Outer East and North East London suggest there is as much variation in Outer London itself as there is between Inner and Outer London.
