The proportion of resident employees paid less than £7.50 per hour by place of residence

What does this map show?

The map is an illustration of the proportion of employees paid less than £7.50 per hour by borough. Three of the four boroughs with the highest proportions are in the East: Newham, Barking & Dagenham and Waltham Forest - the fourth is Brent.

It is a very different pattern to any map we have seen so far. All of Inner West London, and even some boroughs in Inner East & South (Tower Hamlets and Islington) have below-average proportions of low-paid residents. There are also clusters of low pay in the West, the North East and the South.

However, you can see in the Income and Pay Inequality section, that some areas still conform to the traditional Inner/Outer London stereotypes: the proportion of low-paid residents in Newham (26%) is more than three times as high as in Richmond (8%).

The picture is different when looking at low paid jobs.

Additional Information

One important aspect of low pay is how it varies by age. Young people, both in London and across the country, are far more likely to be low paid than older employees. The proportion of 18–21 year olds working full-time in London who are low-paid is four times higher than the proportion of 21–29 year olds who are, in turn, twice as likely to be low-paid as other full-time employees.
