What does this map show?

The areas with the highest rates of infant mortality are spread out round the edges of Inner London: Southwark (which has the highest rate), Newham, Haringey and Brent. The rates in all four - about seven deaths before the age of 12 months per 1,000 live births – are more than twice that in Richmond (3.1 per 1,000).

Five Inner London boroughs (four to the West and Tower Hamlets) have rates of infant mortality below the London average. Above-average rates are also found in Outer London boroughs in both the North and South.

Data used

Key Population and Vital Statistics, ONS, most recent 8 years combined. The incidence iof infant mortality is very small - the figures above are per thousand - so several years data are combined to give an estimate. For instance, in 2007, there were fewer than 10 infant deaths in seven London boroughs.
