Borough profile

This Outer West borough was formed in 1965, under the London Government Act 1963, by the merger of the former municipal boroughs of ‘Brentford and Chiswick’ and ‘Heston and Iselworth’ and the ‘Urban District of Feltham’ of Middlesex. The electoral wards in Hounslow are divided up into 5 main areas – Chiswick, Central Hounslow, Isleworth and Brentford, Heston and Cranford and Feltham and Hanworth.

Hounslow shares its western boundary with Hillingdon and northern with Ealing, while the River Thames forms much of its South-Eastern boundary, with Richmond in the South. The narrow strip of Chiswick touches the Inner London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

The borough has served as one of the main junctions on the various transport routes to and from London – it was the first stop on an important coach route to Southampton, Bath, Bristol and Exeter. The A30 ‘Great South West Road’ that runs down to Penzance in Cornwall starts in the borough. The Great West Road runs from London to the West of England.

In terms of population size, Hounslow is average as ranked against other London boroughs. It saw a steady rise in population from the 19th Century till the mid 20th century, after which followed a brief phase of population decline. Results from the 2001 population Census shows that there were 212,341 residents of Hounslow in 83,994 households. This represents a 5.4% increase since the 1991 census.

The 2001 Census also showed that 35% of Hounslow’s population was from an ethnic minority group, the largest of which was Indian accounting for 17.3% of residents, followed by Pakistani 4.2% and Black African 2.6%.

Hounslow has slightly above-average levels of deprivation in comparison with other London boroughs: it is ranked as the 15th least deprived borough in London and has the 18th highest rate of child poverty (out of the 32 boroughs in the capital). Four wards within Hounslow have been identified as being in the 10% most deprived wards in the UK (“IMD”: http://www.communities.gov.uk/communities/neighbourhoodrenewal/deprivation/, 2007).
