Borough profile

Although Ealing was the first place in Middlesex to become a borough in 1901, the London Borough of Ealing, as we now know it, came into being in 1965 as the old boroughs of Ealing, Acton and Southall were amalgamated.

Ealing is an outer London borough, situated due west of the centre and bounded by Brent and Harrow in the north, Hammersmith & Fulham in the east, Hounslow in the south and Hillingdon in the west. It contains seven distinct town centres - Ealing, Hanwell, Acton, Southall, Greenford, Perivale and Northolt. The borough also contains 19 major open space areas in the borough, which are designated green belt or metropolitan open land areas. This constitutes around 15% of the borough’s land.

Ealing followed a fairly typical outer London population development, insofar as the establishment of transport links led to steady population growth through the 19th century and the early half of the 20th century, before a decline in the 1970s and the 1980s. The post-war period saw the remaining rural portion of Ealing and Northolt developed as council houses were built to accommodate the growing population. At the same time, there was significant immigration from India, Pakistan, Poland, the Caribbean and many other countries.

Today, with 305,300 people, Ealing has the third largest population of any borough in London. However, despite the fact that Ealing has salient natural growth and a very mobile population, with one of the highest levels of international migration in London and net international migration, the large number of people who move to other parts of the UK mean that Ealing experienced has smallest population growth of any London borough between 2001 and 2007 and even saw a slight population decline from 2006-2007.

Ealing is also notable for being one of the most ethnically diverse boroughs in London. In the 2001 census, 55% of Ealing residents were from BAME background (particularly Indian, Chinese, Caribbean and Pakistani groups) and a further 5% from White-Other background such as Irish, Polish or South African. However, the ethnic make-up of the population varies significantly across the borough. A map of ethnic distribution reveals the northeast and southwest corners to be particularly diverse, with only 12% of the south-western ward of Southall Broadway recorded as White British.
